5 Arab films to be screened at the 76th Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival will soon open its doors, bringing together the world’s greatest talents of the 7th art on the shores of the French Riviera. And as every year, the fortnight offers a real field of expression to many films of author or genre, from all over the world. This is an opportunity to list the Arab films that will be presented for the first time at the festival.
Four Daughters
In official competition alongside Wes Anderson and others, the Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania, nominated for an Oscar for The Man Who Sold His Skin, presents her new film in Cannes. The Daughters of Olfa tells the story of a mother (Hend Sabri) who discovers the radicalization of two of her four daughters. Between hope, rebellion, violence, transmission and sisterhood, the film leads us to question the very foundation of our societies.

Les Meutes
Presented in the Un Certain Regard category, Les Meutes the latest film by the young Moroccan director Lazraq Kamal. It follows the journey of Hassan and Issam, father and son, who live from day to day in the working class suburbs of Casablanca, doing small-time business for the local underworld. One night, they are asked to kidnap a man. Then begins a long night through the underworld of the city…

Goodbye Julia
Also in the category Un Certain Regard, Goodbye Julia is the first Sudanese film to enter the competition. Directed by Mohamed Kordofani, and produced by Amjad Abu Alala and Mohammed Alomda, the film takes place just before the secession of South Sudan, and tells the story of a former singer and bride from the north who seeks redemption for having caused the death of a man.
The Nature of Love
Directed by Monia Chokri, a Canadian filmmaker of Tunisian Berber descent, The Nature of Love tells the story of a university professor whose marriage is not exciting and who is attracted to a building contractor she and her husband have hired to renovate their home.
Firebrand
Also in official competition, the latest film by Algerian-born Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz is a historical piece. It finds Catherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), the last wife of King Henry VIII (Jude Law), in the famous case that led to the execution of two of the monarch’s wives, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard.
