Egypt : In Giza, a pyramid transformed into a photo booth

For his second participation in the contemporary art festival Forever is now, the Egyptian street-artist JR has recreated a fake pyramid on the site of Giza, which welcomes visitors for free and offers them to be photographed.
Those who didn’t already know him could discover his work in October 2021, during the first edition of the Forever is now festival. JR, a very influential French artist (1.7 million followers on Instagram), likes to take the great pyramids of Egypt as his playground.
After a metal work in trompe l’oeil last year, the artist is back in Cairo, but this time he saw things bigger. Especially for the occasion, his team created a pyramid from scratch, which he transformed into a photo booth. Free and open to all, the installation allows all visitors to develop their picture in large format, in order to stick it facing the pyramids.

A tribute to the pharaohs
The project was thought of as a tribute “to the pharaohs who built their pyramids in front of those of their predecessors,” writes the artist on Instagram. This ancient code is echoed by Inside Out Giza: “Each visitor sees his or her portrait appear at the top of the ‘monument,’ printed for all eternity before flying away to this sacred and timeless site.”
The second edition of Forever Is Now, organized by Art d’Égypte, takes place on the plateau of the Giza pyramids until November 30, 2022.
