Mukaab, Saudi Arabia’s unveiled colossal cubic skyscraper
The New Murabba project, which is expected to be completed by 2030, would cover 19 square kilometers at the intersection of King Salman and King Khalid roads, northwest of Riyadh.
An immersive experience
Mukaab, a 400-meter-tall cubic skyscraper, is set to become the centerpiece of the Saudi capital‘s new Murabba district. Architects and project planners hope the building will take visitors on an immersive journey. The skyscraper’s hollow cubic shape would house a spiral tower that would project images and alter the design of the walls to create the illusion of being in another place.
The sheer size of the Mukaab would be remarkable. The cubic mega-building would be 400 meters high and 400 meters long on each side. When completed, the enormous structure is expected to be taller than the Empire State Building in New York, and will offer unobstructed views of the Saudi Arabian capital from its observation decks.
The project is inspired by the historic Murabba district, the home of the historic royal palace that bears the same name. Built in the 20th century, the palace is one of the jewels of the capital’s architectural heritage and features traditional Islamic design elements. The Mukaab, too, intends to continue the palace’s legacy by offering a modern take on traditional Islamic architecture, characterized by intricate geometric shapes and patterns.

A new megaproject for downtown Riyadh
The new Murabba district, the namesake of the palace, is expected to cover a floor area of 25 million square kilometers and would include 104,000 residences, 9,000 hotel rooms, 980,000 square meters of commercial space, 1.4 million square meters of office space, 620,000 square meters of recreational assets and 1.8 million square meters of community centers.
When completed, this new mega-district will be the largest modern downtown in the world, with more than 80 entertainment and cultural venues, walking trails and an immersive theater, among other attractions.
The development is a component of Crown Prince MBS’s national Vision 2030 project, which aims to diversify the country’s economy and reduce its dependence on oil revenues by making the country an attractive FDI destination as well as a popular tourist destination.
