Quarantine: The #StayAtHome Challenge for young Berbers

A group of young Berbers, or “Imazighen”, have taken the stage on social networks as part of a #StayAtHome challenge…

They showcase their cultural heritage in short videos while urging their “digital community” to stay home during the quarantine.

They are first seen in casual attire. With a “jebba” on their back and a beauty mask on their face, they grab a brush to apply foundation, which they then point towards the camera. In the second part of the video, they reappear, completely done-up, in traditional garments and Berber jewellery, finished off with a sophisticated makeup look.

Informative yet entertaining

Probably amusing to make, these videos have, as explained above, a threefold purpose. They allow their producers to distract themselves from the boredom and monotony of confinement, they highlight Berber culture, and, above all, they remind all viewers (which are many, since the post racked up several thousand likes, retweets, and positive comments) of the importance, in the fight against the spread of COVID-19, of staying at home.
