The Iraqi city of Hatra is back on its feet

The first phase of repair work at the ancient site of Hatra has been completed. The event represents a great victory for the revival of Iraq, which celebrates its rich historical heritage.

The Arab city of Hatra, located in northern Iraq, is now more than 2,000 years old and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thanks to the efforts of the Iraqi authorities, its restoration is progressing and the country is proudly reconnecting with its roots. After its partial destruction, the first works were focused on the rescue of its foundations, as well as statues and rooms that were about to collapse.

A renovation of the heritage for the renewal of a country

The renovation is supervised by Iraqi experts in close collaboration with international institutions. Built between the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D., the city of Hatra was an important commercial and religious center under the Persian Empire. Its fortifications embody a mixture of cultures and traditions by combining Greek and Roman architecture with typically oriental elements. Witness to a multi-millennial history, the city of Hatra also represents the national roots of Iraq and its long existence.

Today, Iraq is celebrating its first victory in the reconstruction of its history and plans to continue the path of renovation of its ancient buildings to turn the page of its dark years.
