Saudi Arabia inaugurates its official Women’s Football League

This week, the Saudi Sports for All Federation (SFA) launched the Women’s Football League, in an effort to boost female participation in sports. The creation of this community-level tournament comes two years after women gained the right to enter stadiums in the kingdom.
This nationwide league is opening its doors to female athletes over 17 years old, hosting games in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam, and potentially more cities depending on registrations, debuting in March.
Numerous stakeholders in the sports business, famous athletes and journalists attended the launch of the Women’s Football league this Monday in Riyadh.
Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, the president of the SFA, took the mic to announce that: “The commencement of the Saudi Women’s Football League is one more major leap forward for the future of our country, our health, our youth, and our ambitions to see every athlete be recognized and nurtured to their fullest capability.”
Women’s football is one of the world’s fastest-growing sports…
With unprecedented participation and viewership around the world, the preconceived notions about women on the field are challenged. Now Saudi Arabia has been passed the ball and is running with it.
The staff this time will be all-female, from the technical and medical staff to the coaches and referees.
To kick off their first tournament, the contestants will play preliminary rounds to determine the regional champions, who will then move on to a knockout stage and eventually compete for the WFL Champions Cup. The prize money for the winners is set at $133,251 (500,000 Saudi riyals).
Shooting further:
Soon, the kingdom will release details on an additional program under the banner “Beyond Football.”
Crafted for girls as young as five years old, these leagues, events, and festivals are an honest effort towards empowering the next generations of Saudi women to feel free and motivated to pursue football and far beyond.
